The
initial thermal results paint a pretty good picture for this heatsink, but
compared with some other JMC radial
cut heatsinks we have tested in the past weeks, the 60mm fan is at a
disadvantage. The other coolers, such as the JMC 401100 Phoenix 70 Pentium 4 heatsink did
quite well indeed. We'll have to move forward to know where things really
stand, so let's do that now.

In the end we see some pretty good
performance characteristics from the JMC
400124 Phoenix 60 radial cut heatsink. The unique design is
not one we would have pegged as a heatsink that would have done so
well, but sometimes it really is important to do the tests first, and take judgement second.
The Dual-Pass Airflow architecture as JMC call it is an interesting technique, and one that
I think it is safe to say has been copied poorly in years past.
Noise levels are low, but
I wouldn't necessarily classify this heatsink as low noise - the fan rotates at 4500RPM
which gives it a bit of whine - albeit one at a low intensity.
We've said this before and we'll say it again;
since the fins are cut from a solid chunk of aluminum, all the
edges are 90 degree angles which makes them prime targets for dust collection. I don't
think it would be much of a stretch to suggest that the efficiency of this
heatsink will be governed in the long term by how clean it is kept.
The bottom line is that the JMC Phoenix 60 is a pretty good
Pentium 4 heatsink, but not a performance cooler. The 60m fan size being the main
limiting factor, but with a 70mm fan version already here the choice will come down
to price alone. Physically, the little silver muffin-shapped heatsink also looks really neat. :-)
