The results here are not what we were expecting at all. the Akasa AK821 doesn't seem to be performing very well under the 100W small die test at all. Perhaps the fan shroud is not long enough around the outside edges and the exhaust air isn't getting far enough into the heatsink to cool properly? We tested this heatsink out a few times and saw consistently similar results, which are surprising because they are poor.

The combination of a lower noise fan solution and the Akasa AK821 turned out to be less than what we would have hoped to have seen, and is somewhat confusing. I would have thought the AK821 would be capable of better performance but after multiple rounds of testing we saw the same level of performance crop up each time.

There are two reasons we can think of why this heatsink just doesn't seem to perform as well as it ought to. The first may be because the fan is underpowered, and the second may be related to the fan shroud. The aluminum fan shroud only comes down 6mm on the sides of the pins, and it may be that the airflow from the fan is not moving down far enough into the pins to cool properly, or a hot spot is developing at the center.

In any case, the temperature results we have seen here are nothing to get excited about - and for a heatsink with copper base insert, not very impressive. If you are looking for a good socket A heatsink, I'd suggest passing on the AK821 and opting for one of Akasa's other models, like the Silver mountain 2Q.
