Synthetic Temperature Test Results: *Ranked according to 100W small interface die test results.
The Silver mountain 2Q comes in just about dead center in the initial temperature test results. While I'm sure many of you expected the SM2Q to be a "performance" cooler, it really is also trying to satisfy the low noise desires most of us have now. Heatsinks are really important, but it is getting to the point where most of us just can't handle the noise - something quieter is the solution, though performance expectations usually have to go down a little to compensate.
The Akasa Silver Mountain 2Q falls into the category of "lower noise cooling" since its' fan produces less less than 50 dB. With that in mind, the middle of the road performance the heatsink is capable of can be taken in a slightly better light. With a rise above ambient temperature of around 52.8 degrees Celsius on our 100W synthetic test system, the heatsink offers capable cooling for the Athlon processor. I think a faster fan would be beneficial if you were looking to do some overclocking, but with CPU speeds reaching 3GHz on the Socket A platform there really isn't as much of a need as there used to be. In any case, a couple points about the Akasa Silver Mountain 2Q. 1) that matt black wire fan grill looks really nice, and still protects the fingers from damage. 2) The silver coating will prevent the copper from oxidizing over time, and depending on how thick the plating is, fill in some of the small voids between the fins and base. Lastly, while the general finish of the unit we tested was excellent, the base was domed out a little, and could do with some slight lapping for optimal results. You can easily check this on your Silver Mountain heatsink (or any other for that matter) by holding the edge of a metal ruler to the base of the heatsink in front of a light. As long as your ruler is straight you should be able to clearly see how warped, domed, wavy, or flat the base actually is where the processor makes contact.
