CB0309Z17 Heatsink From All Angles

The Fans:
ChoLiang use PowerLogic fans on all the heatsinks we have tested from them up to this point. These fans aren't quite the brand of YSTech or Delta, but so far they have proven to be pretty decent performers. Given the noise levels this heatsink creates I would guess that the fan uses at least one sleeve bearing in addition to a ball bearing. The fan supports RPM monitoring and connects via a standard 3-pin motherboard fan header.

Bare Heatsink:
Note the three holes around the outside of the center core. This part of the heatsink is actually a separate component, so the thermal interface between these two points will be of great interest to us, and reflect directly on how this heatsink performs under a thermal load. The pegs are about 2mm square.

Side A:
The clipping mechanism is built onto the heatsink and very easy to operate, though the clips could be bent up slightly more for a firmer grip. The fan attaches to the heatsink by the fan shroud which keeps the entire assembly slightly above the top of the central core. Fins are 0.7mm thick at the tips and spaced roughly 2mm apart. The fins themselves are 24mm in height.

Side B:
The retention assembly Cho-Liang use is pretty simple, and easy to work with. The only think I could comment on is that the little clips which grab the HSRM should be bent up a bit more for a firmer grip. The red box you see is the fan shroud.

Heatsink Base:
This base area of the heatsink is really well finished and very smooth. Unfortunately it is not the same piece of material as fins. This may cause problems for heats transmission because there is another thermal joint before the fan can begin to do its work. The base measures 45mm in diameter and sits about 5mm above the base of the fin section. The three holes serve no known purpose.
