JMC Arctic Ice 400011 Heatsink Review

JMC strike back in time with the Arctic Ice which is packaged with socket 423 mounting hardware. Luckily, we also have a special socket 478 retention mechanism that will accept heatsinks such as this so we were able to test it out.

There isn't a whole lot to get excited about with this extruded heatsink. The extrusion design is fairly standard stuff, the fan is nondescript and draws a measly 0.17A, and the base is sanded and domed slightly - typical of most extruded heatsinks really.

Only the thermal results will really tell us how much the JMC Arctic Ice factors in today's cooling markets so let's have a look.

    The Fan:

Big bolts hold a small 15mm thick fan in place on the Arctic Ice heatsink. The seven bladed impeller doesn't generate that much noise and really has a very simple look to it. On the positive side, the fan connects to a motherboard fan header with a nice long cable that is rare to see these days.

Side A: Removing the fan is a little more difficult then one might expect because the bolts have hex heads. Looking at the top of the heatsink we see a very plain, and a very un-cut segment of extruded heatsink. There are a total of 22 fins here.
    Side B:
The fins are 1mm thick, slightly tapered at the tips and spaced 2mm apart. Each of the fins are 28mm in height. The base plate to this extruded heatsink is just over 7mm thick.
    Side B:

Normally manufacturers use cross cuts or texturing on the outside of the extrusion to add grip, improve airflow or just make it look better. The Arctic Ice is very, very plane on the inside, and as we can see here, on the outside. Note the small cuts on the two tabs - these can be used to lock the heatsink into a special HSRM.

    Heatsink Base:

The pink thermal interface material is shinetsu G 749. It feels like bubble gum but when enough heat is applied to the material it flows and creates a good thermal interface. As you can see by the photo the base is pretty heavily sanded and full of tiny areas to trap air. Unfortunately the base is not flat in both directions, and falls to the common problem of being slightly domed.
