Dynatron DY1206BH-625 Copper Heatsink Review

Heatsinks with high speed fans and copper bodies are like fast cars with big engines, you are almost guaranteed that they will be noisy and cool like little demons. Of course, some are better than others, and that is what makes it fun to review all the different configurations and fan combinations that come into the lab here.

In this case the DY1206BH-625 is the 6800 RPM version of this heatsink from Dynatron. A 5300RPM and 7000RPM version are also available.

The basics behind this heatsink have made it a pretty popular choice among some performance users, and the simple construction means it has been widely mass produced, and should be easily available if you look around.

I personally prefer the skived fin copper heatsinks from Dynatron over the dip brazed interlocking fins we see here, but that's just me. As long as the base of the fins are well joined to the copper baseplate everything should be just fine.

In order to answer that question we brought out the tools and started dismantling the DY1206BH-625 to do a little on the spot quality check. This was done after the heatsink was tested, and here is what we found: The fins are very thoroughly joined to the copper base plate with standard solder. We could only find one or two very tiny air bubbles in the joint so in general the soldering job appears to be very good.

It interesting to note that the surface where the fins attach has been cut so that the area below the clips is slightly raised above the rest of the base. There are some signs of flux, but otherwise both the fins and the base are nice and clean. Each fin connects to the base by a 1.5mm tab.
