JMC Arctic Blast 400023 Heatsink Review
JMC Products are a Austin based manufacturer of heatsinks for both AMD and Intel processors. The Arctic Blast heatsink we are looking at today is rated for just an Athlon XP of up to 1.53GHz (PIII CuMine to 1.1GHz), so obviously this heatsink is not intended to satisfy performance cooling interests. Honestly, the first thing to catch my eye when looking at the JMC heatsink was the box it arrived in. Whereas most heatsinks come packaged in flashy boxes with lots of eye catching graphics, the Arctic Blast came in a small brown corrugated box. With an ISO-9002 certification, and that industrial supply feel to their packaging, it is easy to see that JMC are targeting OEM's and system integrators primarily. Well lets see what kind of value they are offering with this heatsink rated for up to just 1.53GHz Athlon XP's.
On most extruded heatsinks we have seen, the fin thickness has never gone below about 0.5mm, but on the JMC Arctic Blast the tips go down to 0.2mm, which is quite thin. It is difficult to comment on how well the thin fins will transfer heat up from the base, but at least we can be assured that airflow will not be impacted in any large degree. Skive fins which have been machined flat at the top can suffer from decreased airflow because there is more resistance to the exhaust air from the fan moving down and in between the fins for cooling. An easy path for the air to move through from the fan to the base of the fins is always essential, and the JMC Arctic Blast has done very well in this regards.
