Interested in making you own version of Star wars? This bit from Got Apex is a must read, here's a clip: "The following represents my findings from building a home system designed to edit digital video (DV) on a PC-based machine - at the consumer level. These items originated from numerous emails to friends and friends of friends, wishing to do the same. My purpose is to share what I've learned and generate some good karma in my quest for NLE nirvana.
Non-linear editing (NLE) is not an easy thing for a computer to do, and editing video can be a frustrating experience - especially if you do it with any kind of regularity. Only recently has the computer hardware become powerful enough to build yourself a decent NLE system without costing a king's ransom. As little as two years ago, an NLE system would've broken the bank.
You can still spend $65,000 on a dedicated, turnkey, closed-architecture, video-editing system from the folks at Avid or Media100. However, since most of us don't have that kind of broccoli lying around the house, so we make do by selecting components that match our particular mix of performance and expense."
