Last May, at the E3 show in Los Angeles, we were treated to a preview of the new line of joysticks Thrustmaster was busy preparing. Being a huge flight sim fan, the Afterburner was one of my show favorites, offering a full HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) setup for an amazingly low price. Rather than the realistic ripped-from-the-cockpit look of previous Thrustmaster sticks, the Afterburner is curved and fluid, much like the grip made famous by Logitech. What's the big deal, just another joystick, right? Not exactly. Sim fans have been screaming for a USB HOTAS since time began (ok, since USB was made available), and so far very few full featured controllers have made their way to the market. Of course, no HOTAS review would be complete without a comparison to the Saitek X-36, our current reigning USB HOTAS champion. The problem with the X-36 is that not every gamer wants to drop $100 on a stick and throttle, while the Afterburner comes in at a mere $59.
