Now the first question to answer is "why review a 12x drive?" Sure, there are 16x models, the new 20x part from Samsung and the super duper 24x not-yet-released Plextor. Well, the problem here isn't the speed of the drive, it's the type of media used. Only very high quality disks will run anywhere near 10-12x. The "normal" stuff you buy in spindles at ridiculously low prices usually don't work faster than 6-8x, and the really cheap stuff sold at even more ridiculous prices probably won't hit over 4x. So all in all having a 24x drive right now is pointless, considering you won't be doing anything significantly better with it.
