The 38mm thick Delta fan is not known for its quiet operation. Rather it is known for outputting 45CFM of air for performance cooling where noise is not the issue. This type of fan is amongst the loudest we've seen to date, and additionally if the fan is unbalanced by any small degree it can cause unwanted vibrations throughout the case.

The Dynatron Model-638 is a true performance heatsink, in fact if you look at the results of our tests with it on the large interface die you'll notice that it is the best of the reference coolers. However, since we rank heatsinks according to the smaller interface die it takes second place.

The main difference between the Thermal Integration heatsink and the Dynatron is the fan, the former is moderately loud and the latter is really noisy. Such is the price for performance cooling and on thing is for sure, this heatsink is made to work. Given the great performance on the larger interface die the Model-638 could probably be used on socket 423 processors with great results if desired. It does not comply with specs for the heatsink retention mechanism, but so long as you are not one to move your computer around too much it should be stable on the socket.
