360° View - Arctic Liquid Freezer 120 - Water Block

The coldplate/waterblock and pump is a short 39mm tall, with two fixed rubber hoses shooting out the top. A metal CPU socket metal mounting bracket clips in place around the bottom edge of the entire waterblock, so installation is incredibly easy and forces are evenly distributed. Power is supplied to the pump by a 3-pin motherboard fan header. There is no internal illumination to indicate when the pump is powered up, which is something we like to see.

The pump head measures 80x82mm in diameter and has one 3-pin power connector. The rubber tubes cannot swivel since the are mounted directly into recessed cavities in the top of the waterblock.

The copper base plate that makes direct contact with the processor heatspreader is estimated at 2mm thick and measures 54mm in diameter.

The 49mm thick aluminum heat exchanger measures 154x120mm in size and supports two 120mm fans, mounted in a push-pull configuration on opposite sides.

Fans are attached on either side of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger tubing connectors are metal and do not swivel. The unit itself is actually marked with an Asetek sticker, so the entire system is likely manufactured by Asetek.

Like many other CPU liquid cooling systems in the wild, the Arctic Liquid Freezer 120's heat exchanger is built by Asetek.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The circular copper base plate of Arctic's Liquid Freezer 120 waterblock has a turned surface finish with a surface roughness of approximately ~16 microinches. The copper base plate is very slightly convex in both axes. Arctic describe the base as having a " concentric CNC surface treatment guarantees a smooth and even surface." This would imply the convex surface profile is an intentional design element.

Our synthetic thermal test platforms use a flat synthetic CPU die interface for a couple obvious reasons, but most crucially because the curvature of processor heatspreaders is not standardized.
