NZXT Kraken X40 Liquid Cooler Review
NZXT Kraken X40 Liquid Cooler Review
  0%
Abstract: UPDATED! The NZXT Kraken X40 is a small self contained CPU liquid cooling system based on the exceptionally popular Asetek platform. As with most all-in-one liquid coolers, the Kraken X40 is differentiated from its sister model - the Kraken X60 - by its thinner 140mm-sized aluminum heat exchanger.

FrostyTech Mk.III Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Core i7, Extreme Edition class heatsinks tested at a 200W heat load.
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 200W heat load on the Intel version of the Mk.III Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 200w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

Frostytech's socket LGA2011 Intel synthetic thermal test platform stresses socket LGA2011/1366 compatible heatsinks with a 200W heat load. Keep in mind that the AMD Integrated Heat Spreader and Intel LGA2011 Integrated Heat Spreader both measure ~38x38mm, so these test results can be extrapolated to AMD processor scenario's as well.

With a 200W heat load applied by the Intel LGA2011/1366 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the NZXT Kraken X40 liquid cooling solution yielded an excellent temperature result of 18.2°C over ambient at stock fan speed (59.4dBA noise).

Reducing the speed of the Kraken X40's single 140mm PWM fan to 800RPM saw the synthetic copper CPU die to rise to 25.3°C over ambient while noise output fell to a very quiet 38.6 dBA. All in all, pretty good to average results on this 200W thermal test platform!

If you've been following the self contained liquid CPU coolers since they first emerged on the market, you'll recall these heatsinks were originally released in 120mm fan versions. Shortly after, the 120mm versions were supplanted by 140mm units like the Kraken X40 Frostytech just testing. The CPU cooling industry is nothing if it isn't innovative and now there are single 140mm fan equipped liquid coolers like the Kraken, but with larger diameter tubing so the rate of coolant flow has been increased.... A good example would be the Coolermaster Nepton 140XL which outperforms the Kraken X40 by 6.5°C thanks in part to larger tubing and a second fan. Still, compared to the other all-in-one liquid coolers based on the popular Asetek infrastructure, the NZXT Kraken X40 liquid cooling solution performs favorably, but a little on the loud side at stock fan speed.
