Silverstone Heligon HE02 Fanless Passive Heatsink Review
Silverstone Heligon HE02 Fanless Passive Heatsink Review
  60%
Abstract: The Silverstone Heligon HE02 is being sold as a passive heatsink for sub-95W TDP processors, so today on Frostytech we'll put this big, boxy, silent heatsink through its passive paces. No fans will be used in the testing, just good old noise-less convection cooling.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The HE02 heatsink stands 151mm tall and has a boxy 170x130mm footprint. Each of the six 6mm diameter nickel plated copper heatpipes extends from the base to the top of the 110mm fin stack. Each nickel plated aluminum fin measures 0.5mm thick and is spaced 3.5mm apart.

The bottom cooling fin is elevated 41mm above the CPU socket. The base incorporates a 5mm thick nickel plated copper heatspreader and 8mm thick aluminum block to distribute clamping forces.

The cooling fins have an "H" profile when viewed from the top. Fans can be attached with the supplied metal wire clips to either side of the HE02 heatsink. Fans are not included with the heatsink, however. The nickel plated copper base plate measures 38x42mm in size.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is surface flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The base of the Silverstone Heligon HE02 heatsink is generally flat in one axis and convex in the opposite. The nickel plated copper surface has a smooth, sanded surface finish. Surface roughness is at or better than ~32 microinches, which is excellent.
