Abstract: Arctic Cooling's Freezer 11 LP heatsink is comprised of two sections, a ~100x80mm heatsink fin stack and a thin 92mm fan integral with mounting bracket and fan shroud. The fin stack is comprised of nickel plated fins which are soldered to a pair of 6mm diameter copper heatpipes.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 92mm PWM fan spins at 1200-2000RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header. It's backwards compatible with 3-pin connectors. The two 6mm diameter copper heatpipes are soldered to the nickel plated aluminum fins and copper base plate. The aluminum fins measure 0.30mm thick and are spaced 1.5mm apart. With the fan removed you can see how simple a heatsink the Freezer 11 LP really is. The heatpipes extend and additional 16mm and 20mm beyond the fin stack.

The entire heatsink is 53mm high. Two 6mm diameter heatpipes conduct heat from a 2-5mm thick copper pad to the outer portion of the aluminum fins. The aluminum fins range from 100mm wide at the top to ~70mm wide at the mid-point of the Freezer 11 LP heatsink. From top to bottom the aluminum fins are 32mm deep.

The usable area of the Freezer 11 LP's base is 32x32mm. Each 6mm diameter copper heatpipe is soldered to the copper base block and to the bottom of the nickel plated aluminum fins. A patch of Arctic MX-2 thermal compound is pre-applied to the base of the heatsink. Note how the flat ridge along the sides of the heatpipes is angled by about 20 degrees downward to better deflect hot exhaust air outwards.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The copper base plate of the Arctic Cooling Freezer 11 LP heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately 16 microinches, which is considered very good. The base is machined perfectly flat in both axis.
