Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm silver fan spins at 1800RPM by default. An optional fan speed controller can drop that down to 1200RPM for quieter operation is desired. A standard 3-pin motherboard header provides power, so the fan is not PWM compliant. With the fan removed you can see the two halves of the upper aluminum fins positioned over the lower aluminum fin assembly.

The Evercool Transformer 6 stands about 126mm tall. Its raw aluminum fins are press-fit over the six 6mm diameter copper heat pipes, two per each group of fins. The bottom-most fins are elevated ~40mm above the base for adequate motherboard clearance. The aluminum fins measure 0.5mm thick and are spaced 2.0mm apart.

The copper base of the Evercool Transformer 6 heatsink has a polished surface finish and measures 40x33mm. The copper itself is about 1.5mm thick. The weight of the upper portion of the heatsink causes it to flex the heatpipes downward.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

Evercool's Transformer 6 heatsink has a polished copper base with a surface roughness of approximately ~8 microinches. The copper portion of the base is soldered to the six 6mm diameter copper heatpipes, and the nickel plated upper portion which is aluminum. Soldering can occassionally induce some waviness in the base, but in this situation the copper base is generally flat in both axis.
