Sunon Waturbo Liquid Circulation Heatsink Review
Sunon Waturbo Liquid Circulation Heatsink Review

Abstract: The Sunon Waturbo isn't your average heatsink, at its center is a liquid core and a little magnetically coupled impeller to stir things up.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 92mm magnetically coupled fan on the Sunon Waturbo heatsink looks like any other fan out there, but on the back a small magnetic disk spins in unison with the impeller blades. This sits in a recess in the fan shroud, and drives an internal impeller which mixes up the coolant. The fan shroud has vanes to distribute airflow down into the aluminum fins of the heatsink, rather than allowing it to spin around in the 9mm deep plenum. Power is supplied by a 3-pin motherboard fan header, the internal impeller requires no power source because it is magnetically coupled to the fan above.

From the outside the 80mm tall Sunon Waturbo is unremarkable; all we can see are 42mm tall vertical aluminum fins which measure 0.5mm thick that are spaced 1.6mm apart. The grey plastic fan shroud doubles as a support mechanism for the socket 775 mounting hardware.

The chrome plated copper base is 5mm thick and measures 42x42mm in size. Tamper resistant screws keep the base plate firmly attached, and an O-ring ensures there are no leaks. Note the four posts that mesh with the rear-mounted installation bracket for Intel motherboards. After removing the base plate, we can see the red anti-freeze like coolant and a small impeller at the top of the Waturbo heatsink. The aluminum fins are all about 26mm long.
