360° View - Evercool Buffalo Heatsink

The Heatsink Fan:
Each of the 60 aluminum fins is 110x46mm in size. The tops of the heatpipes are roughly 140mm tall, so some compact computer cases may have height issues with this heatsink. Note the 4mm plenum behind the fan. The fan is held in place with two wire metal clips. This prevents vibrations from creating noise, but may make switching out this 100mm fan for another challenging.

Heatsink Top:
The fan is the most important component of any heatsink. In this case the 100mm Evercool fan is suspended upside down in front of the aluminum fins of the Evercool Buffalo heatsink. The 7-bladed impeller spins at a fixed speed of 1800RPM. The fan draws power from a standard 3-pin motherboard connector that supports RPM monitoring. While it appears as though the blades are just waiting to get caught up in loose wires, there is enough fan frame around the impeller to protect them.

Heatsink Side A:
The body of the Evercool Buffalo stands 128mm tall. The heatsink is held on socket 754/939/940/AM2 AMD processors by the central lug of AMD's heatsink retention frame. The aluminum fins measure 0.3mm thick and are spaced 1.20mm apart.

Heatsink Side B:
There are two 6mm diameter copper heatpipes in the Evercool Buffalo heatsink. The heatpipes intersect 97mm worth of stacked aluminum fins, and are capped with a couple of decorative nuts. The base is fabricated from a 12mm section of nickel plated aluminum soldered to the heatpipes and a thin 2mm sheet of copper. This is by far the thinnest copper base Frostytech has seen in a very long time, but with the trend towards direct heatpipe-to-CPU contact potentially more effective for today's higher power processors.

Heatsink Base:
The Evercool Buffalo HPFA-10025 heatsink has a thin copper base plate measuring 40 x 40mm. The base is flat one axis and very slightly convex in the other. The copper has been sanded to and even surface roughness of ~64 microinches. A small tube of thermal compound is included with the heatsink, so be sure to apply a good even coating before installing the heatsink.
