Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The Heatsink Fan:
In true Alpha form, the correct way to install the fan on the Alpha Novatech PRE9060M92P is upside down; we do this so that hot air is exhausted from the heatsink, with cool air being drawn in by the base of each pin. The PRE9060M92P comes equipped with a 3400RPM ORIX MD925A-12S 92x92x25mm fan. Noise levels hover around the 51 dBA mark. The fan connects via a standard 3-pin motherboard fan header, and supports RPM monitoring. ORIX is a brand of Oriental Motor Co. Japan, which is a well known industrial manufacturer. On a side note, the motor hub is 43mm in diameter.

Heatsink Top:
The fan aluminum fan shroud creates a plenum behind the 92mm fan, and helps direct airflow within the body of the heatsink itself so that thermal transmission is ideally balanced with air flow resistance and back pressure. As is the case with most Alpha heatsinks, the fan exhausts warm air. The air that is drawn into the dense field of cooling pins must pass through the warmest section of the heatsink as it makes its way up and out of the unit.

Heatsink Top:
From the top with everything else removed the Alpha Novatech PRE9060M92P is nothing more than a field of anodized aluminum pins. The pins stand 47mm tall, and are very closely packed in. Each pin is round in profile, and about 3.5mm in diameter. The pin pitch is on the order of 1.0mm. This field of pins occupies 88x88mm of surface area.

Heatsink Side A:
The Alpha Novatech PRE9060M92P is a blocky 92mm across, a little bit larger than the actual footprint of most socket 775 heatsinks. At each corner of the heatsink a small amount of the base plate has been milled away so that there is sufficient space around the heatsink to clear board mounted components. The mounting hardware Alpha supply actually rests under the actual heatsink, which is a nice indication of just how big this cooler is. Like all Alpha heatsinks, the name is laser engraved into the side. The base is 13mm in total.

Heatsink Side B:
From this side we see the two small tabs which the spring clips lock into to hold the Alpha Novatech PRE9060M92P in position on the stainless steel brackets which install directly to the motherboard. The 25mm thick 92mm ORIX fan is suspended 7mm above the tips of the cooling pins of the heatsink. A fan shroud extends 27mm down over the cooling pins so that air being drawn into the heatsink has to travel a farther distance before it is exhausted out by the fan. A 26mm tall slit of cooling pins is left open, this acts as the air intake for the heatsink.

Heatsink Base:
The base of the Alpha Novatech PRE9060M92P heatsink is fully machined, though there are some low-profile tool marks visible. The copper portion of the base is set within the aluminum body, so both metals form the same seamless base. Measuring 49x57mm in size, the copper pad which mounts directly on the processor is quite large; almost double the area of what is actually required to fully cover an Intel CPUs' integrated heat spreader. The copper base pad is at least 3mm thick, probably 6mm overall. The base is perfectly flat in both axis, with a smooth CNC machined finish. Surface roughness is on the order of ~16 microinches, which is considered very good.
