FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

with a 150w heat load applied by the intel lga775 synthetic thermal test platform, the Apack Zerotherm CF800 heatsink achieves a very nice rise above ambient temperature of 31.4°C. The heatsink's 95mm fan was spinning at 2300RPM during these tests, and so it created about 48.4 dBA noise. Compared to the Intel Pentium D heatsink, the Apack Zerotherm CF800 was able to operate about 2°C cooler under equal thermal loads. A heat load of 150W is roughly approximate to a stressed Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition or Core 2 Quad class processor.

The Apack Zerotherm CF800 heatsink was next tested with an 85W heat load, where it maintained a 20.7°C rise over ambient. This is identical to the results for the stock Intel heatsink.

We've also included the synthetic temperature test results for the Apack Zerotherm CF800 heatsink with the 95mm fan rotating at its slowest speed. In actual use it would never maintain an 800RPM speed when the temperatures reach this level, but since this heatsink is thermally controlled and not PWM controlled we felt it was a good comparison to include.

With its fan artificially forced to maintain a low speed of 800RPM the Apack Zerotherm CF800 heatsink operates silently at 34.6 dBA. The heatsink maintains a rise above ambient temperature of 65.5°C at 150W, and 42.2°C at the 85W heat load. At its lowest fan speed the stock Intel heatsink performs far and away better than this. To be clear though, the CF800 would not continue to maintain such a low fan speed under the aforementioned temperatures - we just wanted to see how it would react.

On the whole, Apack have managed to produce a heatsink which roughly matches the stock Intel Pentium D heatsink on the socket 775 platform. While the two coolers were equally matched at the 85W heat load, the Apack Zerotherm CF800 heatsink shows a slight advantage at 150W with its fan at full speed. Although, the temperature difference is not large enough to really justify replacing the stock Intel heatsink in question.
