Whoa this list of reference heatsinks is getting a bit large - we may have to cut it back to ten heatsinks soon... Among the list of heatsinks the Spire 5F263 comes in just about dead center. Performance is not spectacular, and nor is it poor.

The all aluminum heatsink appears to offer pretty good cooling for the noise level it generates and that is something to be appreciated in whatever form it appears. A look at the final rise above ambient temperatures will tell us a few more things about how this heatsink performs.

The Spire 5F263 falls a few notches in this performance chart, largely because of that quieter and slower rotating fan. The heatsink is really well made for the most part, and while this is a bonus it is hard to add a significant amount of cooling value with a common aluminum extrusion like this. Even though there are a few interesting adaptations in the extrusion, the underlying fin structure is what carries it, and without an increase there is it difficult to net the same benefit as heatsinks with faster moving fans will tend to see.

Still, in the end the Spire 5F263 does have its place, and that is among lower noise cooling of non-overclocked processors. The aluminum fan doesn't offer any real increase in cooling and I don't think the 5F263 will be facing any harsh environments so it is difficult to see why Spire included it here.
