Vantec FCE6010 1U-Heatsink Review
Vantec make some damn good copper desktop heatsinks but this little aluminum 1U server heatsink is not one of their best. For today's current line of higher power processors, the FCE6010 just doesn't have the surface area to do the job. Period.
Perhaps if the FCE6010
were to be used on a lower-end (50 watt and under) processor (read Celeron,
C3, or Geode) it would be an acceptable solution, but as far as near 100 watt
(or over) processors are concerned it is not suitable. Knowing the limitations
of a heatsink is important for any application, but doubly so for servers
where downtime is just 'not allowed.'
Given
the size constraints with 1U server coolers that we are aware
of the overall performance expectations for the FCE6010 were pretty average. In retrospect we should have
noticed something was a little awry when the heatsink looked like it might be
more comfortable on a northbridge than a FCPGA core.
